TONU and Layover Calculator
TONU (truck ordered, not used) pay covers you when a load is canceled after you are dispatched or at the dock. Layover pay covers days you are held waiting for a load to be ready. Both are usually set in the rate confirmation, and both are easy to forget to bill.
Enter the TONU fee from your rate con (if the load was canceled), the number of layover days and the daily rate, any deadhead miles you drove because of the cancellation with your rate per mile, and any other out-of-pocket costs like parking. The calculator totals it and gives you an invoice line to paste.
Check any broker free (authority, BMC-84 bond, surety). If a load goes unpaid, get a ready-to-send demand letter and bond-claim packet: $9 with code LAUNCH10 through Oct 29 (then $19).
Frequently asked questions
What does TONU mean?
Truck Ordered, Not Used. It is a fee paid to the carrier when a load is canceled after the truck was dispatched or arrived.
What is the difference between layover and detention?
Detention is paid by the hour for waiting past free time at a shipper or receiver. Layover is usually paid per day when you are held overnight or longer before a load can move.
How much is a TONU fee?
Whatever your rate confirmation says. If the rate con is silent, it is a negotiation, so get the amount in writing from the broker before you leave.
What if the broker refuses to pay TONU or layover?
Invoice it with the rate con and your proof. If it stays unpaid, a formal demand letter and a bond claim are your next steps. The claim packet prepares both.
